About the project

The Smart Metalworking Cooperation for Competitiveness (SME-COOP) project addresses the common challenge of low competitiveness and outdated industrial structures in the Bulgaria–North Macedonia cross-border region, where metalworking SMEs face increasing pressure to modernise production, reduce energy intensity and adopt digital solutions.

The project aims to enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of SMEs in the cross-border metalworking sector by modernising production capacities, fostering structured cooperation and building innovation potential. The project combines investments in advanced machinery with joint production, digitalisation, circular economy principles, knowledge transfer and cross-border innovation.

Project objectives

The overall objective of SME-COOP is to strengthen the competitiveness of metalworking SMEs in the Bulgaria–North Macedonia border region through investments in advanced machinery, joint production standards and the development of a pilot prototype.

Through training, Open Days and cooperation, the project promotes digitalization, circular economy and innovation, generating sustainable benefits for the metalworking sector in the Bulgaria–North Macedonia cross-border region.

Expected results

  1. Installation and integration of advanced CNC machinery;
  2. Jointly developed technical documentation and production specifications;
  3. Establishment of cooperative cross-border production between the project partners;
  4. Development of the pilot product “Office Home Smart Safe”, integrating mechanical and digital features;
  5. Improved knowledge and capacities in energy efficiency, resource optimisation, circular economy, digitalisation and cross-border cooperation;
  6. Dissemination and demonstration of project results through communication activities and Open Days.
